Airbnb Letter to Mayors:

We Commit to Clear Regulations in Tourism Leasing

HomeAway announces new features to find homes based on cleanliness, flexible cancellations

HomeAway has announced new ways for families to find holiday homes so that when they are ready to travel again they can easily find accommodation that meets their standards for cleanliness and flexible cancellations...

HomeAway

“HomeAway has been connecting families with private, holiday homes for 25 years, and it is obvious that COVID-19 has added to what people need as they plan their next trip – having the flexibility to change or cancel plans and knowing how space has been cleaned is essential to feeling comfortable enough to travel again,” said Vrbo president Jeff Hurst."

“We’re adding the tools quickly to meet those additional requirements families now have when they are choosing a place to stay, as well as the systems our homeowners and property managers need to clearly communicate their policies and standards with future guests. Transparency between holidaymakers and homeowners about expectations and protocols is more important than ever."
Destination&Tourism | May / 2020-21

HomeAway is working with local governments, the travel industry and medical experts to ensure homeowners, property managers and holidaymakers are receiving aligned, clear cleanliness recommendations.

Homeowners and property managers now have clear information for disinfecting high-touch surfaces, building in time between bookings to avoid back-to-back stays and stocking antibacterial handwashes, cleaners and hand sanitizers for guests.

HomeAway is adding enhanced safety steps partners are taking to property descriptions so holidaymakers can choose places to book that meet their expectations. Homeowners and property managers will be able to report if the property is being cleaned with disinfectant, if guests can check-in and out without any person-to-person contact, and whether the property is unavailable for 24 hours between guests. Once property owners have supplied that information, HomeAway will add it to the property descriptions that holidaymakers see on the site and app.

In another addition to HomeAway, families will be able to use search filters to see holiday rentals with the highest cleanliness reviews from other holidaymakers. Former guests have already provided cleanliness reviews on 900,000 HomeAway properties. Even before COVID-19, cleanliness was a top expectation for holidaymakers when renting a holiday home, and holidaymakers say their most valuable source of information is people who have already stayed in the holiday home, cottage or apartment.

When looking for properties with flexible cancellation policies, families can use HomeAway search filters to find holiday homes that provide a full refund when cancelling by a specific date. HomeAway will also highlight listings with the most relaxed cancellation policies, making it easier for families to find holiday homes that offer free cancellation closer to their check-in date.

“HomeAway’s homeowners and property managers told us that in response to COVID-19, adopting more flexible cancellation policies is the number one thing they are considering doing in the near future, so we’re supporting that by making the changes easy for them and highlighting the nearly a million properties that already have flexible cancellation policies and those that are adopting them,” said Hurst.

WTTC Unveils Global Protocols to Restart Travel & Tourism

LONDON—The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global travel and tourism private sector, has unveiled a range of new worldwide measures to restart the sector.
The measures have been designed to rebuild confidence among consumers so they can travel safely once the restrictions are lifted.
The new “Safe Travels” protocols provide consistency to destinations and countries, as well as guidance to travel providers, operators and travelers, about the new approach to health and hygiene in the post COVID-19 world.
The health and safety of travelers and workers is put at the heart of the new global protocols, which have been drawn up by WTTC members. Based on the best available medical evidence, following guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they also avoid the emergence of multiple standards, which would only delay the sector’s recovery, according to the organization.
Gloria Guevara, president/CEO, WTTC, said, “We have learned from the past, especially after the tragedy of 9/11, where the lack of coordination among governments and with the private sector caused long-lasting travel disruption, higher costs and a longer recovery time. Coordination and alignment within the travel and tourism sector is vital to ensure that robust global measures are put in place to help rebuild confidence and which are jointly embraced by the governments and private sector.
“We are delighted that, for the first time ever, the global private sector has aligned around these new Safe Travels protocols, which will create consistency across the sector,” she added. “Now we are calling on governments to adopt them so that they can be implemented globally and restore much-needed confidence in order to restart the travel and tourism sector.”
Evidence from WTTC’s Crisis Readiness report, which looked at 90 different types of crises, highlights the importance of public-private cooperation to ensure that smart policies and effective communities are in place to enable a more resilient travel and tourism sector.
WTTC is devising the new Safe Travels protocols following close consultation with its members, as well as industry associations like Airports Council International (ACI), Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
These will apply across the main industries within travel and tourism, including hospitality, aviation, airports, cruise operators, retail, transportation, MICE and tour operators among others.
Detailed discussions are taking place with key stakeholders and organizations in each industry within the sector to ensure maximum buy-in, alignment and practical implementation, with hospitality and retail guidelines being released.

New Vaccine Tests from an American-German Partnership
11/05/2020-2022

Michael Sikorski is taking part in historic rehearsals. He is the 17th medical student to be injected with the candidate vaccine to prevent COVID-19. "I feel a sense of responsibility, an obligation: I'm young, healthy and I can take part in this test for the vaccine," he said. Sikorski and 360 others are taking part in the first phase of testing for the vaccine being developed by Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech. The company is testing four vaccines in parallel, using a method known as mRNA. The vaccine injects a small genetic sequence of the virus into the body, which the body treats as foreign protein and creates immunity to it.
"Now the body is ready, it has created genetic memory. When the body encounters a real virus that can infect it, it responds quickly and prevents it, ”says researcher Mikael Dolsten.
The main challenge for Pfizer is to prolong the life of antibodies in the cell.
Many pharmaceutical companies are trying to win the race to develop the coronavirus vaccine.
The American firm, Moderna, as well as the National Institutes of Health, are using the mRNA method in tests that began last month. Inovio has begun testing based on DNA methods.
BioNTech / Pfizer tests began on May 5, while the Chinese company CanSino Biologics is ahead of the others, having passed the second stage of tests. Oxford University in England began rehearsals last month. Researchers in Wuhan and Beijing are using the traditional method of testing, injecting volunteers with inactive viruses. The leading American expert on infectious diseases predicts that the world will have an effective vaccine by October:
"Then comes the challenge of mass production so we can send it wherever we need it," says Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Meanwhile, participants like Sikorski are now under surveillance to ensure that the vaccine has no side effects:
"At 9 o'clock, every night, the cell phone rings and reminds me to fill out my daily diary on my health. Measure the temperature with the thermometer they gave me. I answer the questions of the form, for example if I have muscle pain, fever, joint swelling, ”says student Michael Sikorski.
If all goes well, the vaccine is expected to be in circulation by the end of the year, an unparalleled achievement in terms of reaction rate to immunize the population against a disease.

Another promising test has begun for a coronavirus vaccine. A partnership between the two companies - one American and the other German - began last week in the United States. Some participants are medical students. Worldwide, several tests are underway to find a vaccine against COVID-19. VOA's Carolyn Presutti reports:

Greece Plans to Welcome Tourists as Soon as July

While parts of the world are still grappling with the rising number of coronavirus cases, a few places have done a notable job of squelching the virus at the door.
Greece, in particular, has seen roughly 2,700 confirmed cases throughout the entire country, a relatively low number in comparison to other European vacation destinations. Because of this, prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis thinks the country may be able to welcome visitors back as early as this summer.
"The tourism experience this summer may be slightly different from what you've had in previous years. Maybe no bars may be open, or no tight crowds, but you can still get a fantastic experience in Greece—provided that the global epidemic is on a downward path," Mitsotakis said during an interview with CNN.

July: ITB China 2020-2022

POSTPONED

ITB China 2020, which was scheduled to take place from 13-15 May 2020 in Shanghai, is being postponed due to the ongoing implications of the COVID-19 outbreak. The deferred show dates will be further announced by the show organizer.

The decision is based on the current risk evaluation of the COVID19 epidemic by local and global authorities. According to the regular report and COVID-19 prevention notification released by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China recently, the COVID-19 situation in China continues to be challenging and developments in the following months are very hard to foresee at this stage.

To ensure the safety of our participants, we decided to postpone ITB China 2020, and in a responsible way allow all participants to make necessary arrangements in a timely manner. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates based on official assessments of the overall risk situation.

We regret any inconvenience caused by this decision and sincerely ask for your understanding.

AIRBNB TO LURE TRAVELERS WITH A NEW HYGIENIC PROTOCOL

AIRBNB TO LURE TRAVELERS WITH A NEW HYGIENIC PROTOCOL

Named the "Advanced Cleaning Initiative”, the document was developed with the help of a doctor, based on the recommendations of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The temporary rental platform has always struggled with the way the hosts decide how and when they clean their houses. Therefore, Airbnb now opted to establish a hygienic protocol and even a certification to secure clean accommodation.
In response to the crisis in the tourism industry and the traveler insecurity caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the rental platform announced a new cleaning protocol to guide the hosts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The hygienic protocol includes several instructions for homeowners on how to clean and disinfect each room in the house, specific information about COVID-19, and disinfectants certified by health authorities.
Airbnb has decided that hosts who follow the new recommendations will receive a special certificate so that they can be easily identified by people seeking housing.
The platform also established a mandatory minimum interval between each rental. Those who comply with the new cleaning protocol must guarantee a period of 24 hours between the check-out of one traveler and the check-in of the next. Those who do not comply with all hygienic steps will be obliged to wait 72 hours before receiving a new guest.
This break is based on recommendations from experts applied in another Airbnb program, which has already offered more than 200.000 stays to health professionals who are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 in countries such as Germany, Spain and Italy.
The program is to be launched in May in the United States. Only after that, it will be implemented in other destinations.
The new hygienic protocol is an effort of the company to reassure travelers and reactivate reservations on the platform, which have fallen dramatically due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A survey by AirDNA, a company specialized in online rental analysis, reveals that Airbnb lost US$1 billion in bookings, with 90% of cancellations and an 85% drop in new bookings.

“Italy Will Not Close off to Tourism This Year”

coronavirus-tourism

The president of the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT) Giorgio Palmucci, says that Italy will not close off to tourists this year.
Palmucci’s announcement came in after reports that Italy was going to shut down its borders to tourists, until 2021, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports. “Tourism in Italy will start again, with all precautions and in maximum safety, Dario Franceschini, (minister of cultural heritage, activities and tourism) did well to clarify that no border closure is expected. Those who love Italy must be allowed to return to enjoy it, in compliance with governmental and regional guidelines,” he pointed out. Italian National Tourist Board’s president clarified that he never said that Italian borders should remain closed to tourists, even though Italy is the third most affected country from the Coronavirus outbreak.
“I have never spoken, nor ever thought, of closing the Italian borders to tourists for 2020. I am working on the exact opposite. I proposed at the meeting of Tourism Ministers of the European Union, a European uniformity of the safety rules with respect to the risk of contagion, allowing the free movement of tourists within the European Union,” Palmucci added. He said that during this delicate phase is essential to defend Italy also through correct communication. According to him, misinformation and fake news risk creating serious damage and “unjustified alarmism”. The head of ENIT said that its important to follow institutional sources and reliable news as much as possible, such as those provided by the Italian National Tourist Board, which provides an official bi-weekly update on the situation in Italy and the world. As Italy is starting to see signs of slowing in infections, there have been reopened three border crossing points between Italy and Canton Ticino, which have been closed since mid-March as part of efforts to halt the spread of Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19).

Sicily to subsidise post-Covid holidays as Italy considers reopening to tourists

Sicily’s regional government is offering to subsidise holidays on the island for both domestic and international visitors in an effort to kickstart tourism after the coronavirus pandemic. News of the scheme came days before a statement from the Italian government that it expects borders to be open to tourists this summer.

A financial pot of €75m of regional government money has been set aside to boost tourism following huge financial losses after the lockdown came into effect across Italy on 10 March. Current plans include subsidising visitors’ accommodation costs, offering one night of a three-night trip for free, or two nights of a six-day trip, as well as vouchers for cultural and heritage activities. The plans were detailed in an interview with Sicily’s tourism director, Manlio Messina, on Italian news show Mattino Cinque. There have been reports that the funding may also be used towards paying for up to half of the cost of flights, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Once the lockdown restrictions have been successfully eased further (without a rise in coronavirus cases), more information on how to take advantage of the offers will be posted on the Sicilian tourist board website.

Meanwhile, quashing what he called “fake news” reports that Italy may be closed to holidaymakers for the rest of 2020, Dario Franceschini, Italy’s culture and tourism minister, told newspaper Il Messaggero: “I have never talked or ever thought of closing Italian borders to tourists for 2020. I am working towards the complete opposite, and proposed yesterday at a meeting of EU tourism minsters a uniform approach to managing infection risks. We are also starting bilateral talks with other countries that send a lot of tourists to Italy.”

Tourism revenue fell by 95% in Italy in March, according to banking group UBS, and the national tourism agency is forecasting a €20bn drop in tourist spending for this year compared with last.

This week Italy entered phase two of its lockdown, including the reopening of parks, and restaurants for takeaway meals. Some shops, museums and cultural venues are due to reopen on 18 May, and there is much discussion about managing social distancing on beaches and creating space for more outdoor tables at restaurants.

Although he ruled out closing the border, Franceschini added a note of realism: “I imagine, unfortunately, that international tourism will drop sharply this summer – both incoming and outgoing. So we are making a strong investment in domestic tourism, because this will be a summer of holidays in Italy … You have to adopt the right balance between safeguarding health and restarting economic and social life. It must be done with the utmost care. We’re moving one step at a time.”

Warren Buffett dumps airlines shares despite pent-up demand for air travel

Warren Buffett, the legendary investor from Nebraska, has announced that he sold his stakes in four major US airlines.
Buffett admitted that the coronavirus pandemic totally changed the game for the aviation industry and the major borrowings needed to support these airlines will limit their advantage.
In early April, Berkshire Hathaway reportedly sold some shares both Delta and Southwest – 13 million for Delta and 2.3 million for Southwest. Berkshire Hathaway was the largest institutional holder of Delta at the end of 2019, the second-largest in United and Southwest, and the third-largest in American.
Investors are aware that global travel has been reduced to non-existence as many countries closed their borders due to the virus. Airlines stocks dramatically fell and things are not likely to improve in the near future. It may take years for airlines to recover their losses and to bring their operation back to “normal”.
Meanwhile, it seems that air travel is slowly rebounding and airlines are counting on the pent-up demand once the crisis is over. The Transportation Security Administration’s count of passenger reached 171,563 on 1 May, the highest total since 29 March, when the total was 180,002.
However, this number includes the airline crew and airport employees who pass through security. Moreover, Friday’s count was just 6.7% of the 2.5 million people who travelled on the same date last year.
Airlines are hopeful that people will travel again once the government allows it. United Airlines president and CEO-designate Scott Kirby said on the airlines’ earnings call last Friday that there is pent-up demand and people are starting to search for possible trips in 2021.
“As we look longer term, we see some evidence of pent-up demand. For example, searches for 2021 spring break travel on our website are actually higher this year than they were at this time
last year.

Travellers survey: COVID-19 is a concern but not enough to cancel trips

Most travellers (86%) are concerned about the novel coronavirus, but overwhelmingly (89%) still plan to travel, based on the results of a Global Rescue survey of its members who are among the most experienced travellers in the world.

“Nearly 60% of our members say they are not changing their travel plans due to coronavirus, about 16% are taking a wait-and-see approach, 12% are revising travel plans, 8% are postponing and 4% have cancelled trips,” said Scott Hume, vice president of operations in Global Rescue.

The company, which specialises in providing aid services to people in catastrophic circumstances said travellers are largely concerned about potentially ending up quarantined. “Every traveller should be aware that restrictions—like mandatory quarantines or entry denials—can be imposed without warning,” Hume added. Travellers preferred—by an overwhelming three-to-one margin—getting medical advice, a diagnosis or a prescription using a smartphone for access to online video call with a physician if they suspect they have been exposed, instead of visiting a doctor’s office

Covid-19 underscores need for contact center resilency

Coronavirus (Covid-19) has created many operational issues for businesses across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. While many B2C businesses across sectors such as retail, tourism, and transportation are struggling to stay afloat, they cannot ignore their customers during the crisis. Against this backdrop, the pandemic has underscored the need for contact center resiliency to be part of the business continuity planning, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. According to GlobalData, several legacy contact centers are not architected to cope with Covid-19 scenarios. Especially for companies that are facing different degree of anxiety among customers, the ability to address customer needs is crucial for the long-term success. In Asia, India and the Philippines are the two key call center outsouring destinations and as these places go into lockdown, contact centers operations are affected. Some of these contact centers may not have the technology and process in place to support remote agents.  Siow Meng Soh, Senior Technology Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The Covid-19 crisis has revealed the need for contact center solutions to be more resilient, scalable and easy to setup. As things become unpredictable, businesses want the flexibility to scale their operations. In dealing with the immediate demand, there is no time for extensive RFP and vendor evaluation. Businesses can look to their existing suppliers for solutions that can meet their near-term requirements. Established players such as Avaya, Cisco, and Genesys all have cloud-based solutions that can enable customers to scale their contact center operations.” For example, Avaya is offering a 90-day complimentary license for remote agents and Genesys has a set of interim license programs to help customers manage higher interaction volumes as a result of Covid-19. Cisco has also announced ‘Work from Home’ Webex Contact Center Quick Deployment solution which offers a temporary solution (90-day subscription) with no minimum volume requirement and can be deployed in five days. Soh continues: “In the longer-term, companies across the region that are looking to replace legacy solutions should consider a range of cloud-based solutions available in the market. They should also consider the potential of AI in the contact center, the importance of having the ability to support omin-channel, and automation through communications platform-as-a-service (CPaaS).” There are many cloud-based contact center solutions in the market. One that is gaining attention from enterprise customers is Amazon Connect. As a leading cloud provider, AWS enjoys competitive advantages over other smaller cloud-native contact center companies.

62% of Americans are still going to workplaces amid shutdown

According to Atlas VPN investigation, lockdowns successfully reduced the mobility of citizens, but 62% of Americans are still going to work. Recently, Google published its user’s location data to show how quarantine impacted the behaviours of citizens in various countries. Here, baseline or 0% is data from the beginning of the year, from January 3 to February 6. We compared the mobility data of 5 countries together with the timeline of their lockdowns. Among others, Google provides mobility trends for places of work. On March 29, both US and German citizens are coming to work around 40% less. In Spain and Italy, 60% of workers are not working at all or are working remotely. The UK is slowly closing the gap, with workplace mobility decreasing by around 55% by the end of March. In the middle of March, the International Labour Organization estimated that over 25 million jobs could be lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic globally. However, just two weeks later, they admitted that their estimations were conservative. On March 28, a record-breaking number of 6,648,000 Americans applied for unemployment benefits.

US behind other countries in response

It is apparent that the US is one of the latest adopters of social distancing and stay-at-home recommendations. Also, the US is one of the last countries in which coronavirus is rampant, but there is no nation-wide lockdown.

Slow and rather insignificant response to the crisis might be the reason for the extreme growth in coronavirus cases in the US. It is now in the first place, with a total of 336,830 infections as of March 6.

Retail and recreation mobility accounts for places like movie theatres, restaurants, cafes, museums, etc. In most countries, people are visiting such sites 70-90% less. Yet, Americans only reduced their visits around 47%.

Spain and Italy, which are in the second and third place in terms of total infections respectively, reduced their visits around 97%. Italy was the first country to enforce nationwide lockdown on March 9. In Spain, the lockdown started soon after, on March 13. In comparison, the UK government ordered a shut down of non-essential businesses on March 23.

Record-breaking increases in calls and gaming

Facebook recently reported that in countries hardest affected by the coronavirus, the volume of messages increased by over 50%. In Italy specifically, the number surged to over 70%. Also, voice and video calls on WhatsApp and messenger more than doubled during March.

Moreover, telecommunication company Verizon shares its data on its user’s internet traffic in the US. Most notably, Americans took up gaming, and video game traffic jumped by 102%.

Another record braking area is in phone calls. Verizon recorded an average of 800 million calls per day in March. In contrast, this is twice the amount of calls than during Mother’s Day, which was the record day for calls beforehand. Together with call frequency, the average call duration increased by 33%.

The future of travel – “partnerships”

ABTA demanded the government suspend the travel industry’s refund rules or face “catastrophic damage to the UK travel industry, and widespread consumer detriment.” The travel industry body said that operators do not have the money to refund travellers in the current 14-day window and have asked for this period to be extended to four months. This pandemic has had widespread implications for the travel industry with governments across the world enforcing travel restrictions, leaving travel providers looking for innovative new ways to keep their businesses afloat. As is often the case, turbulent times give rise to innovation. Some travel providers are seeking to buoy their businesses through the use of partnerships. Through association and cooperation, companies can help one another weather the storm. Given that the travel industry is a low margin business, with airlines making as little as £5.00 per seat, enterprising partnerships can make the difference in helping companies survive. P2P travel money provider WeSwap has established 25 partnerships in recent years. Through these, WeSwap has been able to advertise their business through airlines and travel agents, with an estimated 0.5% of passengers taking advantage of their ancillary services. It is this sort of relationship that can help the travel sector bounce back in the coming months. Matt Crate, WeSwap’s managing director, commented: “This 14-day rule is causing havoc for travel companies and non-action would result in claims on the ATOL compensation scheme, which still hasn’t recovered from the collapse of Thomas Cook. These events that shake an industry are not expected to come within such a short space of time of one another, but businesses must act quickly to ensure they weather this storm and are ready to thrive again when the fog lifts. One solution that we are seeing at this moment in time is that businesses within the industry are proactively approaching us to talk about partnerships. Whilst the current downturn is proving difficult, the upturn is going to come. When it does, travel businesses will be looking for new revenue opportunities. It is therefore important that we use this period to establish new working relationships.

ADARA launches customer identity guide for travel marketers adjusting to end of cookies era.

ADARA, the world’s travel data co-op and leading provider of traveller intelligence, released important thought leadership about the increasingly critical role of consumer identities for travel brands. Entitled ‘Identity Data: The Smarter Path to Customer Insights’, the report provides recommendations to help marketers understand, plan and implement an effective identity strategy.

“As third-party data use becomes more restricted by regulation and browser policy changes, identity serves as the next data approach for structuring and delivering intelligent multichannel marketing, while preserving customer insights and analysis, using compliant first and second-party data,” said Charles Mi, chief technology officer at ADARA.

The report defines identity as ‘an authentication that allows a company to recognise someone, either actually or anonymously, depending on permissions and data regulation compliance’. The concept of a unique identity signifier is part of a larger movement amongst marketers to use identity to aggregate and organise data.

Travel marketers need to be proactive and flexible with their data strategy. In the current market, travel brands are looking to increase their campaign performance and data quality, while remaining privacy compliant. This report shares best practices for creating a robust identity strategy that can help brands create internal multichannel marketing and aligned data collaboration with partners.

Coronavirus’ Travel Impact: WTTC Says 50 Million Tourism Jobs at Risk

With the COVID-19 outbreak classified as a global pandemic earlier this week, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has come forward stating that the coronavirus has put up to 50 million jobs in the Travel & Tourism sector at risk.

According to the WTTC, international travel can be negatively impacted by up to 25% this year, which is equivalent to the loss of three months of global travel. This could lead to a 12-14% loss of jobs in the industry.
The organization has also criticized the ban on travel from Europe to the U.S. recently issued by the president. The WTTC suggests that the ban will damage the U.S. economy without actually preventing the spread of the virus.
“We all share the priority to stop the spread and should take all necessary actions,” WTTC CEO Gloria Guevara said in a statement. “However, the new travel ban will have a dangerous economic impact on the U.S. and many other countries, and there is little evidence to show this will stop the spread of Covid-19.”
The WTTC is currently working in partnership with the public sector to prevent the loss of nearly 50 million jobs in the industry. It is also taking a series of measures to guarantee the Travel & Tourism’s speedy recovery once the coronavirus is under control.

Policies that the WTTC is working to implement include:
– Improving travel facilitation.
– Removing barriers such as slot restrictions.
– Easing fiscal policies such as air taxes.
–Introducing introduce relief and incentives to businesses negatively impacted by the virus.
– Supporting support destinations with increased budgets and for marketing and product development purposes.
“Travel & Tourism has the strength to overcome this challenge and will emerge stronger and more robust by taking all necessary measures to tackle COVID-19 and the understandable concern which surrounds it," said Guevara.

Seasonal Accommodations Closed - What About Continuous Operations? SETE welcomes the decision

With a Government Gazette issued last night, Saturday 14 March 2020, it was decided to impose a temporary ban on seasonal accommodation from today 15 March 2020 to 30 April 2020, with the same accommodations already in operation to be closed until March 23, 2020. This decision places these accommodations in the protective laws that will follow after the cessation of measures taken to deal with COVID-19. The question now is what to do with the permanent housing that is actually closed or underfunded and leaving the government NOT to enforce their protective laws - and thus excludes assistance. We know that a huge part of the work of these hotels in large urban centers, but also in smaller areas, has essentially been "working" with conferences and excursions that have already been banned. Is this capable of incorporating them into protective laws? It also remains unclear what will apply to short-term Airbnb accommodation, which is numerous and certainly more uncontrollable.Above all, in protecting public health, we need to be prepared to deal with the difficulties that arise daily, to have reflections, to see the big picture, and to methodically prepare for the next day. That today seems cruel, tomorrow may be salvation. We continue on the same path of responsibility . "
In the coming days, we expect more 'nasty' decisions from the Government. The decision shall be signed by the Ministers:

Five credit cards that have your best travel interests at heart

Financial MasterCard B

Brim Financial MasterCard

Brim Financial excels as a travel card in its travel offerings across all three levels of its cards - The Brim card, Brim World and Brim World Elite. The Brim family of cards offer the below benefits for travelers:

• No foreign transaction fees
• Access to Boingo Wi-Fi which is used at more than 25 airports and is essential for frequent travelers.
• Mobile Device Insurance
• Common Carrier Accident Insurance
• Bonus points for travel purchases (1 point for Brim card, 1.5 for Brim World and 2 points for the World Elite card).
• Airport Lounge Key for Brim World and Brim World Elite holders
• Brim World and Brim World Elite holders also give users insurance for Flight and Baggage delays as well as lost baggage, hotel burglaries as well as insurance for any personal items stolen from a rental car.

On top of these travel perks, all three cards also offer rewards that you can use based on the brands you regularly use like Netflix and UberEATS. These include restaurants, shopping, groceries and others. Users can also easily upgrade their Brim card, making this a great all-around option for young adults who will grow their income and travel habits over time.

Meridian Visa Infinite Travel

Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card

Many travel cards offer premium travel perks for a premium annual fee. While not as cost-effective as Brim's entry-level card, the Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card, with a $99 annual fee that's waived for the first year. With that users get the following:

• 3% in points for every travel purchase and 1.5% on all others.
• Emergency healthcare coverage up to $5,000,000 per insured person for eligible medical care
• Trip cancelation baggage and mobile device insurance

As for foreign transaction fees, the card charges the standard 2.5% but if these are used on travel expenses (like taxies, flights and hotels) the 3 points per dollar spent puts users 5% ahead in points. This isn't as simple nor as preferable as no transaction fees but it's better than nothing..

Rogers Platinum Mastercard

Rogers Platinum Mastercard

Like the Meridian card, The Rogers Platinum offers 3% cashback to offset the standard 2.5% foreign transaction fees while offering 1.25% on everything else. There are a few benefits that make this a possibility for someone's first travel card:

• No Annual Fee
• $25 credit for making any purchase in the first 3 months
• 2% Cash Back on Rogers and Fido products and services
• 3% cashback on purchase made in foreign currencies
• No minimum income requirement

This is a solid first travel card option thanks to the no minimum income requirement however the lack of a "just right" option between this and the Rogers World Elite makes other options that allow for an earlier upgrade more attractive for non-Rogers or Fido customers..

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite
As you can tell by the name, this card has the benefits of being backed by a major bank while having some of the perks associated with travel cards. With that comes a high annual fee ($139) but certain benefits as well:

• 25,000 rewards points after spending $1,000 spent in the first 3 months.
• No foreign transaction fees
• 2 points per dollar spent on travel, groceries, restaurants and entertainment; 1 point on other eligible purchases.
• Travel insurance,
• Priority Pass membership
• 6 airport lounge passes per year

Scotiabank customers who travel frequently and meet the income requirement ($60,000) should add this card to their shortlist but seriously consider if the travel benefits fit into their travel habits.

A positive step towards continuing to work with cities and governments to develop clear and up-to-date rules for short-term rental housing marks the recent European Court of Justice ruling on Airbnb (that is, the platform is an online booking service and not the co-founder and head of Airbnb strategy, Nathan Blecharczyk , in a letter he sent to the mayors of major European cities shortly after the ruling was issued.
Cities can and should have their own clear and up-to-date rules on the allocation of housing, rented out to tourists or tourists, Nathan Blecharczyk points out in his letter to the mayors. Airbnb, it says, has partnered with governments and municipal authorities around the world on measures to help hosts share their homes, comply with the rules and pay their fair share of taxes.
"I and my co-founders remain 100% committed to working with you to continue this important work," the letter emphasized, adding: "We want to ensure that our platform works for everyone and that our close cooperation continues innovative solutions to the challenges cities face while working together to create new income streams for local families, businesses and communities. "
Nathan Blecharczyk begins his letter by saying that Airbnb started when two of the co-founders couldn't afford it and to make some extra money they opened their home and welcomed the first Airbnb visitors. After 10 years, hosts around the world are doing the same and welcoming more than two million visitors in one night.
We strongly believe that renting houses to tourists is doing good to their cities and residents, he points out in the letter. Last year alone, Airbnb contributed more than $ 100 billion to the top 30 markets worldwide. And since Airbnb was founded, hosts of bookings from the platform have earned more than $ 80 billion.
Nathan Blecharczyk also says that Airbnb wants to be a good partner in all the communities in which it operates, so it welcomes the "fair regulations" that are being imposed on cities, believing that clear regulations are good news for everyone.
"We are proud that every day around the world we work with cities to legislate and adopt proposals that diversify tourism, protect housing and facilitate more hosts to pay more taxes," the letter said. Already in more than 500 competent Authorities worldwide, Airbnb is paying more than $ 2 billion in tax on tourist home leases.
The ruling of the European Court of Justice, the co-founder of Airbnb points out that the platform should be regulated as an information society service and not regulated. Cities must have their own clear and up-to-date rules for the allocation of their homes, and in this respect Airbnb is working and wants to continue to work with governments and municipalities

Survey: How Chania Tourism Shaped in January-July 2019
A decline in Scandinavian tourists, representing almost half of the tourist arrivals in the Chania region, was recorded in January-July 2019, compared to the same period last year. In total, arrivals of foreigners at Chania Airport at 7 decreased by 3.7%.

The decrease was 15% for the Swedes, 11% for the Danes and 7% for the Norwegians, while the increase was only from Finland (by 3.3%).

A sharp decline is also recorded by the Poles by 10%, for the first time after a steady increase in recent years, while the largest decrease by the Italians is 66%, mainly due to the fact that Ryanair, a low cost airline, stopped many routes from various cities of Italy to Chania, also limiting the existing routes from specific airports of the neighboring country to Chania Airport. A worrying phenomenon for Chania is the relocation of flights this year from various countries to Heraklion Airport, which is downgrading Chania as an entrance gate.

On the contrary, encouraging is the rise of the Germans by 4.2%, of the Austrians, who record the largest increase of 62%, while the British record a significant increase of 13%, recording 11,000 more arrivals than in the same period last year, many more than any other ethnicity, making them the first to arrive at Chania Airport for the first time, displacing Scandinavians from the top.

How important tourism is to Turkey's economy

Turkey's fastest-growing sector of the economy appears to be tourism, contributing $ 96 billion to the country's GDP, according to a study by the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC).
The research, conducted in collaboration with American Express, examined the impact of tourism on 8 sectors of the economy such as agriculture, health, mining, banking, construction, sales and the automotive industry in 26 countries in 10 regions of the world.
Gathering all of the above, the survey revealed that tourism accounts for 12.1% of annual GDP, contributing 7.7% to reducing unemployment and making it the second most powerful sector in the country.
Gloria Guevara , President and CEO of the WTTC, said that Turkey is again a strong player that attracts millions of travelers to its coasts every year. Tourism is very important for Turkey not only because it contributes to GDP but mainly because it creates jobs.

50 pound fee for Turks who visit Greece

The Turkish authorities imposed a fine of 50 pounds, or about 5 euros, for each Turk leaving his country to Greece. The new measure has been in effect since yesterday, August 1st and already the first Turkish citizens to come to Greece have paid the price.
The impact on the Evros economy is expected to be large, as the costs are certain that the average Turk cannot lift.
Especially for a family of four, the exit fee is £ 200, or € 32.5. In the coming days, as we are in a holiday season, the first conclusions will be drawn as to whether the entry of Turkish visitors to Greece is affected by the imposition of the measure.

6 tips to travel with the cheapest airfares!

If your main goal is to find the cheapest airfares, then the key is to let flights define the destination, rather than the opposite. It may not always be possible to go anywhere at any time, but if you have some flexibility, you can become a bit spontaneous and travel to a destination you do not know much about! Check out below 6 tricks to book your cheapest flight tickets for your next trip!
1. Compare search engines
Do not rest on the services of just one search engine but compare the prices to many different ones. Sometimes it is better to go directly to the airline site.
2. Travel when you get the least competition
If you can, choose a date and time when your flight will not have much demand. Flights during the week, early in the morning and late at night will ensure you the cheapest air tickets!
3. Create your own combinations
If you are willing to make stops (and perhaps discover the city you will be in for a few hours), sometimes the flight search engines will not show you all the possible combinations that may work best for you. Take a look at each flight in detail, since it can be more affordable and more expensive.

4. Track your flights
On many flight search sites you can choose to receive an email when the price on the flight you want falls off. When the email comes and the price is low, buy the tickets as it goes up again.
5. Close one position at a time
The cost of two seats on a flight is more than twice the cost of closing one. If this is the case with your flight, then close the seats one by one to get the most cheap airfares!
6. Change your browser
It is a common secret that if you are looking for a flight very often, each time the price will be even higher. So look for the flight from different browsers so it does not seem like you're looking for it often.

One in six Spaniards gets a loan to go on holiday

15.7% of Spaniards are funding their holiday with some form of loan, such as consumer loans and credit cards, according to a study by iAhorro, a bank credit comparison firm. The alternatives to these two modes of financing are sufficient and for the right choice, each stakeholder must take into account all possible charges as they depend on many factors, some of which are the total amount of the loan, the repayment period as well as of course, the applicant's financial situation. This year, the Total Annual Effective Interest Rate (APR), which is the entirety of the loan to be paid in interest terms, reaches 20%. In general, there is the possibility of large bank loans in Spain, such as Bankinter, which gives loans up to 90,000 euros, while the repayment period can reach 96 months (eight years). Smaller amounts in shorter payouts may have a higher interest rate than larger amounts in long-term payback. For example, Santander Bank, Préstamo Expansión, for an amount of € 2,500 and a repayment period of 18 months, has an APR 20,48%, while the same loan of € 60,000 with a repayment of 96 months has an APR of 11,63%. Additionally, one needs to consider whether they can get a specific loan option as, for example, the Santander loan, Préstamo Consumo 1, 2, 3 is only given to account holders in the Cuenta 1, 2, 3 bank deposit account and the agreed interest rate is mainly dependent on the client's financial condition. Evo Banco, on the other hand, has loans whose interest rates are not very variable, which is around 9.27%. In addition, attention should be paid to any additional loan costs, as some banks have a commission of between 1% and 2.5% of the total amount received at the beginning of this issue. With regard to credit cards, the APR may exceed 20%. One that should be taken care of by those who want to obtain a credit card is if there is an extra cost to owning the card. Most banks do not charge, or charge little, a card if their owner is also a customer of that organization. For example, the El Corte Inglés credit card charges EUR 12 if it is paid on a quarterly basis and does not charge it if the payment is made on a monthly basis. Particularly important for the right choice of credit card, is the evaluation of the various discounts offered by each card. According to HelpMyCash, a business related to the aforementioned, household payments to repay their debts must not exceed a total of 35% of their income.

The decline in the tourist market in Russia continues

The average decline in the quarter (April, May, June) reaches 20%, in absolute figures - 23,233 fewer people. The picture confirms our earlier reports on the trend of the tourist market that we have presented since October 2018.
This is what the CEO of TEZ Tour Greece spoke to Mr. Manolis Apladenakis, who stressed that "the picture is clearly downward despite the efforts made by most tour operators and difficult to revert to the final number that will give all the tour operators arrivals. If July, August and September show better occupancy in hotels and stronger arrivals than in the previous quarter, the season will end at a loss even marginally. "
Asked Mr. Apladenakis about the image that TEZ Tour presents this year at both Greece and Crete level, he replied that "the image of arrivals for our company so far has not changed compared to last year we expect that in the next four months we will be able to keep on coordinated actions in a marginal, positive climate".
It is worth mentioning that Heraklion Airport for June shows a total decline of 0.9%, namely 546,590 passengers to 541,536, the main indicator of this year's image.

Thanks to air and sea travel, we’ve been able to traverse every corner of the globe and now cross continents in a matter of hours. Whilst this has led to a better connected global community and infinite discoveries, it has also deepened our footprint on areas that were previously untouched and the effects that tourism is having on the environment and climate change are colossal indeed.
It’s no wonder, then, that the last couple of years has seen the rise of eco-tourism, with many finding ways to reduce the impact their adventuring has on the world around them.
Though there are plenty of things we can do to help offset our travels, the responsibility falls to hotels and tour operators to clean up their acts and make significant changes to their environmental policies. Rather than wading through the sustainability ethos of every establishment you come across, there are several travel companies that are solely eco-focused, so you can book your next trip safe in the knowledge that it’s as ethical and eco-friendly as possible.
