RETHYMNO

CRETE’S PRECIOUS CHARM

Rethymno town is a rare combination of history and modern-day luxury, with its Venetian-era Fortezza and old town, tropical beaches and exquisite Cretan cuisine

Welcome
to Rethymno

The Rethymnon Regional Unity is the heart of Crete and one of the most beautiful parts of Greece. Rethymnon with Psiloritis and the blue sea, with traces of 4,500 years of civilization, with numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, with magical Venetian monuments, with the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece, with endless sandy beaches, caves, caves , is waiting for you.

Rethymnon and its villages are lively cart-postal, where the Cretan cuisine smells and the Cretan lyre is heard.

People ally nature and emotion beyond the codes of the big city. Wherever you go, even in the most remote village, people will open the door for you, treat you with tsikoudia, become your friends.

Rethymnon is the home of Zeus, the god of hospitality. The abundance of repeat visitors confirms the poet's words: "Rethymnon is not a place to go but to return" .

This Rethymnon is the alternative vacation offer we make and invite you to discover.

A Guide to the City of Rethymno

With its lively atmosphere and its photogenic mix of Venetian and oriental elements, Rethymno has many loyal fans

Rethymno is the only city in Crete which is built on a cape, and more specifically, “on the boundary between calmness and fierceness,” as the location is eloquently described by local writer Pantelis Prevelakis. To the east stretches a vast sandy beach, while the coastline is rocky to the west. Unlike Irakleio or Hania, Rethymno never had a large port that would have made it a center of trade. But it does have a wonderful old harbor, full of color, lined with Venetian and Ottoman buildings that have for centuries been reflected in its calm waters. The best time to explore the city is very early in the morning, when the light is perfect and the tranquility a sheer delight.
The cool air of morning is also propitious for making your way up to the Venetian citadel, the Fortezza. When it was built (1573-1580), on the hill once occupied by ancient Rithymna, it was the largest fortress on Crete. High up on the battlements, you will feel the salty breeze from the Sea of Crete; you can walk along the old defensive trenches, between the towers, bastions and gates, among the solitary palm trees. Here, too, is the Erofyli open-air theater, which hosts the celebrated Renaissance Festival every summer.

 Take a Trip to Argyroupolis

The site on which once stood the ancient city of Lappa is today known as the village of Argyroupolis. According to the legend this powerful Cretan city was founded by Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae who led the Greek army in the Trojan War. In this charming village you will find numerous Venetian mansions many of which are used as homes and others have been turned into boutique hotels. The village is famous for the springs of Argyroupolis where you will come across numerous small waterfalls amidst the ancient plane trees. Here there are a few tavernas where you can fish your own trout and enjoy it grilled to order. The village is also home to some historical churches such as the tiny church of Agia Kyriaki and the church of the Holy Five Virgins.

Rethymnon is one of my favorite places in Crete. The charming old town and proximity to a nice beach as well as the many restaurants along the water are some of the best reasons for this. Rethymno is also a bit less touristy than Chania, but still close to the airport.
Crete is the ultimate vacation island, and Rethymnon has a great mix of all the things you can wish for. It’s also easy to rent a scooter or car to visit more secluded places such as Balos Lagoon or Elafonissi.
If you go to Rethymno, make sure to have a traditional meal at one of the Greek tavernas located next to the water in the old town.

The Fortezza: built for war, dedicated to culture

The Fortezza: built for war, dedicated to culture
The restored residence of two Venetian Councillors, the Ottoman mosque built by Sultan Ibrahim Khan (now hosting musical events), the Bishop’s Palace, the Ibrahim Khan Mosque, cannons, bastions, mansions… are just a few of the attractions that await you at the Fortezza, a 16th century fortress. Many of the restored buildings host exhibitions and major cultural events, such as the annual Renaissance Festival.

The Unique Scenery Of Preveli Beach In Crete

Preveli Beach in Crete is located about 35km south of Rethymnon and 10km east of Plakias. Preveli Beach, also known as Limni of Preveli (Preveli Lake) or Finikas (Phoenix), is located at the exit of the imposing Kourtaliotiko gorge, crossed bu the Great River.
It is certainly the most famous beach of southern Crete, and receives thousands of visitors every summer.

The amazing view when reaching Preveli Beach:You have two basic options to access in the area, either from west or east.

The imposing rock in Preveli Beach
To avoid difficult climbing, you can also drive the dirt road leading to the nearby village Drymiskiano Amoudi. Then you can walk the short path leading to Preveli in just 5 minutes. However, you will not have the chance to see the breathtaking views from the high cliffs of the west side.

The new monastery of Preveli, Piso Moni, is the most important monastery of the region. It has twenty cells, hostel, library and museum. In the museum are displayed vestments, sacred vessels and important religious relics. The view from the monastery is unique as it is at a very great height and overlooks the endless Libyan.
